The first XKB nuclear flask wagons of this type were built at Ashford in 1975 and equipped with FTB6 fabricated bogies capable of heavy-duty service. These wagons were numbered B550009-14 from which the B prefix was dropped shortly afterwards. The design of this type of Flatrol was unique in that they were constructed from stainless steel; a material which makes decontamination easier to achieve, should it become necessary. Small batches of these wagons were constructed between 1975 and 1981 taking the fleet total to 10.
This is the nuclear flask wagon that preceded the FNA and were modified into FNAs.
The modification involved a sliding cover which protected the hot flask if accidentally touched. The sides were also modified to give a straight top which allowed for location resting pillars for the flask damper when unloading the flask.
Requires 4 x 12mm wheels/axles and shouldered pinpoint bearings
